How to Relocate Your Pet from the UAE: The Complete Guide

By Qasr Al Waha Movers · · Updated 30 September 2026

In short

A pet move from the UAE is planned around the animal’s calendar, not your flight date. The microchip must be fitted before the rabies vaccination, and where a rabies antibody titre test is required it carries a fixed waiting period of several months from the blood draw that cannot be compressed. Start four to six months out.

Start from the animal, not the flight

Every other part of a relocation can be compressed if you pay for speed. A pet move cannot, because the constraint is biological and legal rather than logistical.

Work backwards from these fixed points:

  1. Microchip. Must be fitted before the rabies vaccination. If the chip goes in afterwards, the vaccination does not count and has to be redone.
  2. Rabies vaccination. Valid and in date at travel.
  3. Rabies antibody titre test, where required. Blood is drawn at an approved vet, sent to an approved lab, and the destination imposes a fixed waiting period from the date of the draw — commonly three months, sometimes longer. Nothing shortens it.
  4. Import permit, obtained before travel is booked.
  5. Health certificate, issued by an official vet close to travel — usually within ten days.

For a titre-test destination, four to six months is realistic. For the GCC, several weeks.

The UAE export side

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment issues the UAE export permit. You will need the microchip number, the vaccination record and the animal’s details, and the permit is time-limited — issued close to travel, not months ahead.

Where your destination sits

  • EU: Microchip before rabies vaccination, EU health certificate from an official vet, arrival at an approved traveller’s point of entry. Because the UAE is not on the EU’s listed-country list for every purpose, a titre test is commonly required, with its waiting period.
  • UK: Microchip before vaccination, valid rabies vaccination, animal health certificate. Dogs additionally need tapeworm treatment given by a vet between one and five days before arrival. Animals must travel with an approved transport company on an authorised route — arriving outside those routes can mean quarantine at your cost.
  • GCC: Import permit from the destination agriculture authority, microchip, current rabies vaccination, official veterinary health certificate. Permits take weeks rather than days. Several breeds classified as dangerous are prohibited outright.
  • Australia: The strictest. Quarantine on arrival is mandatory and booked in advance.

Airlines are the usual constraint

Paperwork is predictable. Airline willingness is not.

Summer heat embargoes. Gulf carriers restrict live animal carriage when ground temperatures at origin, transit or destination exceed set limits. In practice that removes much of June to September for many routes. A booking made in May for an August flight can be cancelled by the airline, not by you.

Snub-nosed breeds. Bulldogs, pugs, Persians, Himalayans and similar have compromised airways and are refused outright by many carriers, or restricted to specific temperatures and aircraft. Check before you buy anything else.

The crate

The travel crate must be IATA-compliant: rigid, ventilated on at least three sides, with a secure door and no wheels fitted at travel. The animal must be able to stand without touching the roof, turn around completely, and lie down naturally. Undersized crates are refused at check-in, which is not the moment to discover it.

Buy the crate weeks early and leave it open at home with bedding and treats inside. An animal that already sleeps in the crate travels far better than one meeting it at the airport.

What it actually costs

Pet relocation is priced on the crate size, the route, the airline’s live-animal charge and the destination clearance — not on the animal’s weight alone. A large dog to Europe is a materially different number from a cat to Muscat. The honest answer is that anyone quoting a flat price without asking the breed, the crate dimensions and the destination has not priced the job.
